Why Are Dental Extractions Important?

Dental extractions are sometimes the best way to get relief from the pain of a damaged, infected, or impacted tooth. While we always prioritize other procedures, when possible, tooth extractions can help prevent further complications and pain. And with advanced tooth replacement options like dental implants available at Skylyn Dental Associates, it’s easy to replace one or more teeth after your dental extraction in Spartanburg. What To Expect At Your Extraction Appointment

At your initial appointment, Dr. Paul Gibas, Dr. John Dunbar, or Dr. Adam Brantley will examine your mouth to determine if extraction is really the best option for you. We always use dental extractions as a last resort at our Spartanburg office, so if we can save your tooth or preserve it with a different treatment, that’s what we’ll recommend.

If your dentist determines that an extraction is right for you, the procedure may begin right away, depending on the severity of your oral health issue. However, you may need to schedule a follow-up appointment to have your teeth extracted if they are not posing an immediate threat to your oral health.

Extraction Options

Basic Extractions

This type of extraction is also known as a “simple” extraction and is typically used to remove teeth that have been damaged by decay, periodontal disease, or oral injuries. Your dentist will numb the area, wiggle the tooth loose, then pull it out. The area will be cleaned, disinfected, and sutured, and you’ll be sent home with a set of recovery instructions.

Wisdom Teeth Extractions

The wisdom teeth are our final set of 4 molars, and are a natural part of the mouth. However, when they grow into the mouth between the ages of 17 and 25, wisdom teeth may cause problems with the rest of the teeth, particularly in people who have had orthodontic work. For this reason, they are often extracted once they erupt fully.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth Extractions

If your wisdom tooth has not erupted all the way, a surgical extraction will be necessary to remove it. In this procedure, an opening is made in the gum near the tooth. Then, your dentist will use special tools to cut the tooth into smaller pieces and remove them through this opening. Once the tooth has been removed, the area is cleaned, sanitized, and sutured shut to heal.

Sedation Options

We offer a variety of sedation options including laughing gas, oral sedation with a pill, and IV sedation. At Skylyn Dental Associates, you’ll feel safe and calm throughout your entire extraction appointment in Spartanburg.

Recovering After Extractions

It will take about 1-2 weeks for your mouth to fully heal and recover after your extraction appointment at Skylyn Dental Associates. During this time, you’ll need to follow instructions provided to you by Dr. Gibas, Dr. Dunbar, or Dr. Brantley to speed up the healing process and ensure you avoid complications. You’ll need to eat soft foods, avoid exercise for a few days, and take a few other steps to heal quickly and get back to your day-to-day routine.
